IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)
A simple, effective fertility treatment where highly motile sperm is placed directly into the uterus to improve chances of conception.

Overview & Clinical Approach
A minimally invasive fertility treatment that increases the number of healthy sperm reaching the egg.
At Maa Nursing Home and NetraJyoti Eyecare Centre, IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is one of the primary infertility treatments offered to couples. In IUI, highly motile and processed sperms are placed directly into the woman’s uterus, increasing the chances of sperm meeting the egg naturally.
The sperm used may be from the woman’s partner or a screened donor, depending on the medical condition.
Recommended for male subfertility, cervical factor infertility, endometriosis, ejaculatory problems, or when donor sperm is needed.
Common Symptoms
- Unexplained difficulty conceiving after timed intercourse
- Mild male subfertility (low sperm count or motility)
- Cervical factor infertility or hostile cervical mucus
- Immunological infertility
- Ejaculatory dysfunction or requirement of donor sperm
Primary Causes & Risk Factors
- Mild male factor subfertility
- Anovulation or cervical mucus hostilities
- Azoospermia in male partner (requiring donor IUI)
Diagnostic Procedures
- Comprehensive semen analysis and swim-up/density gradient sperm processing test
- Follicular ultrasound tracking to monitor egg maturation
Treatment Steps
Counselling & Ovarian Stimulation
Medications stimulate egg growth monitored by ultrasound follicular scans.
Semen Collection & Processing
Sperm washed via Swim-Up or Density Gradient to isolate top motile sperm. Donor sperm is quarantined for 6 months to screen for infections such as HIV.
Insemination & 14-Day Wait
Fine catheter places processed sperm in uterus 12–36 hours post-HCG; pregnancy test in 14 days. Typically 3 IUI cycles are attempted before IVF or ICSI is recommended.
When Is Donor Sperm Recommended?
- Male partner has azoospermia (zero sperm count)
- Poor sperm quality or compromised morphology
- Genetic disorders that may pass to the child
- Non-obstructive sperm production problems
Key Treatment Benefits
- Simple, quick, and painless procedure taking only 10–15 minutes without anesthesia
- Significantly more affordable first-line treatment than IVF
- Enhanced sperm washing isolates the healthiest motile sperms for direct placement
